Stainless and aluminum
Boats are built mostly from stainless and aluminum, and both demand more care than mild steel. Stainless comes in two common grades. 304 is the everyday grade. 316 adds molybdenum, which stands up to salt water, so it's the marine grade. The filler metal is matched to the grade, so the weld resists corrosion as well as the rail it joins.
Past work includes stainless rails on charter boats scheduled around the weather, custom stainless work on two boats for one owner, and a fishing boat modified for disabled access. Aluminum boats and pontoon brackets are welded too. For docks, I assess the right repair before any work starts.
What I do
- Stainless rails and fittings
- Pontoon and trolling motor brackets
- Aluminum boat repairs
- Boat modifications, including disabled access
- Dock platforms
- Boat trailers, covered under trailer repair
Jobs we do most on boats and docks
Aluminum and stainless, on the water or on the trailer. These are the repairs boat owners call about most, and the bigger rebuilds.
The calls we get most
- Stainless rails and fittingsRails and fittings rewelded with filler matched to the grade, and 316 where the boat sees salt water, so the weld lasts as long as the rail.
- Aluminum hull cracksCracks in aluminum hulls and seams, cleaned to bare metal and welded, then plated where the hull flexes.
- Pontoon and trolling motor bracketsAluminum brackets welded on where the boat sits. One trolling motor bracket was nearly two hours from McMinnville.
- Grab railsCustom aluminum grab rails, bent to shape and welded onto the gunwale.
Bigger jobs
- Pontoon decks and railsThe worn deck and old rails came off, and a new aluminum diamond-plate deck went down with new rails and trimmed edges.
- Dock frames and platformsDock platforms and their frames repaired. We work out how the platform should be fixed before any work starts, then get it done quickly.
- Boat modificationsA fishing boat modified so a disabled angler can get aboard and fish, in most of a day at the owner's shop.
- Rotted trailer supportsA rotted rear support on a boat trailer, rebuilt and welded in at the owner's home.

$250
call-out, within an hour's drive
Covers the trip and about the first two hours on the job. Custom work is estimated free from your photos. Repairs are priced on site.
What changes the price
- DistanceInside an hour's drive, the $250 call-out covers the trip. Longer drives are priced and agreed before I leave.
- MaterialAluminum and stainless take more time and shielding gas than mild steel.
- AccessIf the truck can't park close, running cables and gear to the work adds time.
- PrepRust, paint and grease come off first, and cracked or thin metal gets cut out. A weld is only as strong as the metal under it.
- Plate and partsNew steel, extra plate and replacement parts are added to the bill.
What boat owners say
Google reviews from boat and dock jobs, word for word.
I have had Neal provide two different welding jobs on two different boats. Both were custom jobs, working with stainless steel. Both jobs turned out great! We are more than satisfied! Neal is a gentleman and highly skilled! He cares about his work, the surroundings and the end results! We will call on his skills and talents again! Brian T.Read the whole review
Nothing but good things to say about Neal's Mobile Welding Service. Have had a fishing boat that needed some modifications to assist in access for disabled fishing. Neal came out and took a look at what I wanted, made some great recommendations, we discussed cost and came to a very readonable agreement. We worked out date and time, he was at my shop for most of a day and now I have a few bits of wiring to complete and the boat will be ready to get wet. If you are looking for a businessman that will treat you fairly and does awesome Welding no matter the material (stainless steal, aluminum, or steel)I would Highly recommend you give Neal's Mobile Welding Service a call, you will not be disappointed.Read the whole review

Neal did an amazing job welding an aluminum trolling motor bracket on our pontoon boat he traveled nearly 2 hours to do so he does charge accordingly but we were so thankful he did an amazing job so happy with his quality of work he kept us updated with arrival time came as expected highly recommend Neal for your welding needs
Thank you for the excellent service. A job well done with integrity and professionalism. I needed aluminum welding done on my boat and the work went longer than expected but got it done and it looks great. Thanks again.
Neal did an EXCELLENT job on repairing my boat trailer. One of the main supports for the back of the trailer was TOTALLY rotting through. Neal made something out of nothing, in my opinion, giving me a great finished product and great service - especially coming to my house to do this. I would recommend Neal for any welding needs.Read the whole review
Neal did a great job welding some stainless repairs for us. Great quality work and very timely. Would recommend!
Incredibly happy with the quality of work and the service… These days it’s usually only 1 of those or neither… I got lucky and Neal was able to show up same day. Arrived on time and literally worked non stop without taking a break. When we ran into a problem because of a mistake the previous welder I hired made not only did Neal fix it but stayed an extra 4 hours into the night and finished the job to help me meet a deadline. It was a complicated job a lot of different parts that had to line up and all stainless steel. His truck is literally a Mobile fabrication shop with every tool to get the job done. I feel lucky to have found him and will only be using him in the future!Read the whole review
Common questions

Do you weld stainless?
Yes. Rails, fittings and custom parts, on boats and elsewhere. Let me know if it sits in salt water, so the right grade is used.
Do you weld aluminum boats?
Yes. Hulls, brackets and rails. Send a photo of the area.
Can you come to the boat or the dock?
Yes, as long as the truck can get close. Tell me where it's stored or tied up.
Do you go to the coast?
Yes. Tillamook and Lincoln counties are in the service area. The drive runs over an hour, so the trip is priced separately and agreed first.
