Built for your space
Off-the-shelf rails rarely fit, and a loose rail is how people get hurt. A sagging gate never closes right.
I take the measurements myself and build each rail in the shop for the exact stairs, driveway or ramp it serves. In the shop, a flat table and clamps hold every piece square while it's welded, so the rail goes in straight and solid. The welding truck then brings it out for installation. Older rails and gates with failed welds can be repaired in place. Handrails carry a lifetime warranty.
Gate openers are installed as well, so a new gate opens from your vehicle. Powder coating is done through a trusted partner shop, and the piece comes back finished.

What I do
- Stair and porch rails
- Rails for steep driveways and wheelchair ramps
- Storefront ramp rails
- New gates, and repairs to broken gate welds
- Gate openers installed
- Old railings joined, repaired or rewelded
- Old gates and rails removed first, covered under steel demolition
- Lifetime warranty on handrails
The numbers
- Handrail height
- 34 to 38 in, measured up from the stair nosing
- Guard height
- 36 in, anywhere the drop is more than 30 in
- Gaps
- Tight enough that a 4 in ball can't pass through, so a small child can't slip between the bars
- Ramp rails
- 34 to 38 in high, extending 12 in past the top and bottom of the ramp
These are the residential figures in Oregon. Commercial work has its own requirements, so mention it up front if the job is for a business.
Rail and gate jobs we do most
Homes, farms and businesses. These are the rails and repairs we build most, and the bigger custom gates, stairs and security work.
The calls we get most
- Stair and porch railsMeasured on site and built in the shop to fit the exact stairs, then installed. Handrails carry a lifetime warranty.
- Ramp and driveway railsRails along wheelchair ramps and steep driveways, built 34 to 38 in high and run past the ends of the ramp.
- Gate repairsBroken gate welds, sagging frames and worn hinges repaired in place, so the gate swings true and latches again.
- Old railings joined or reweldedVintage and salvaged railings cut, joined and refit to a new spot, or rewelded where the old joints failed.
Bigger jobs
- Driveway gates with openersSwing gates on new steel posts, with an opener installed so the gate opens from your vehicle.

$250
call-out, within an hour's drive
Covers the trip and about the first two hours on the job. Custom work is estimated free from your photos. Repairs are priced on site.
What changes the price
- DistanceInside an hour's drive, the $250 call-out covers the trip. Longer drives are priced and agreed before I leave.
- MaterialAluminum and stainless take more time and shielding gas than mild steel.
- AccessIf the truck can't park close, running cables and gear to the work adds time.
- PrepRust, paint and grease come off first, and cracked or thin metal gets cut out. A weld is only as strong as the metal under it.
- Plate and partsNew steel, extra plate and replacement parts are added to the bill.
We had a tight deadline and he worked overtime to meet our deadline and still charged us his regular rate.
What customers say about their rails
Google reviews from rail and gate jobs, word for word.
Neal did a fantastic job fabricating and installing a railing on our very steep driveway. It is exactly what we needed to help my husband go up and down the driveway with confidence. Neal came by the day after I first contacted him about the railing for an estimate. He knew exactly what we needed and how to accomplish it. He finished the work on schedule and was very communicative throughout the process. I would highly recommend him for any iron work project you might have.Read the whole review
I recently found Neal on Craigslist and thought I’d try my luck. He offered me a free quote in North Portland and I later found out he commutes from the McMinnville area. That’s nuts. I showed Neal my structure and posed to him my ideas. He brought up some concerns and let me tell you I’m happy he did. I ended up changing the designs and I’m better off for it. Because I changed the plans Neal had to come out a 2nd time to prepare his materials and shop time accordingly. When I was finally ready after weeks of delays on my part, Neal came back out and absolutely slayed the gig. The custom stairs he built me to enter my custom underground greenhouse are exactly what I had in mind and they not only look incredible they feel incredible too. What too, given the dingbat stuff with delays and inexperience on my side he could have easily tacked more money onto his original bid, but when work was finished and we said our goodbyes he didn’t change the bid and I was able to stay on budget. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, Neal didn’t just show up when he said he would, he showed up with a positive and respectful attitude. The man exudes cheerfulness. I feel lucky to have found him, and all my future projects will leave me wondering how I might incorporate Neal again. Good guy, awesome work. Super fair prices. 10 out of 10 absolutely.Read the whole review
Neal “cut and pasted” 2 sections of vintage salvaged railings with precision and expertise. he was generous with instructions how we can further restore and preserve our “new” railing . Neal is professional, hardworking and pleasant. highly recommend
Neal did a great job on our hand rails for our wheelchair ramp. I would highly recommend him.
Neal from Neal's Mobile Welding did excellent work creating and building a beautiful railing that fit into my landscape wonderfully! He is detail oriented, listened to my preferences and produced a railing that proudly blends beautifully in my yard.
Neal is a gem. Straight up really nice guy and SOLID skills. We had a 2-door gate whose retro-fitted welds were sub- standard & not up to task. When they failed, we called Neal. He was kind, courteous, skilled, and totally reasonable. Will definitely call him for any decorative welding fixes as well! You can't go wrong with him
Neal did a great job on our rought iron railing I will work with him again for sure
I’m so happy with our new rail. I really appreciate his communication and hard work. Thank you, Neal!
I would highly recommend Neal to anyone needing any sort of welding work done. The day after Christmas I had a 5 inch aluminum guard rail that was broken at the seam and was bent out of alignment pretty bad. Neal dropped what he was doing and went to get his rig. Had us back up and running in no time. Fantastic job at a fair price! Thank you Neal! 5 Stars!Read the whole review
